Growth mindset is a hot topic these days, but mainly with regards to our students. Today, we urge you to adopt this mindset for you too!

"In a growth mindset, challenges are exciting rather than threatening. So rather than thinking, oh, I'm going to reveal my weaknesses, you say, wow, here's a chance to grow." - Carol S. Dweck

Strategy Session:

Teachers need a growth mindset too

Growth mindset is everywhere. It is taught in teacher licensure programs, noted on classroom vision boards, and if you Google the term, you'll see about 102,000,000 results. Most educators have embraced the idea that students will achieve more in school if they believe that their mindsets are not "fixed," but rather learning and intelligence can be improved through hard work and perseverance. We see this theory offer our students the ability to raise the bar for themselves, and to stop fretting over mistakes and so-called failures.

But how about the adults in the room? Teaching is a difficult job, there's no doubt about that. Some days can feel not only overwhelming, but downright impossible to power through. From creating inclusive lesson plans so that every single soul in the room can learn, to managing challenging student behaviors, the work day for an educator does not always feel successful. Therefore, we urge you to consciously consider your own mindset when it comes to YOUR learning this school year. Do you feel that your own mistakes as an educator are opportunities for growth or personal failures? Do you look for opportunities to challenge yourself as a professional, or do you try to simply skate through the school year with what you already know how to do?

We wrote an article, Start 2020 with a Growth Mindset, that can help you enter this second half of the school year with a growth mindset. You'll see 3 simple things you can do today to adopt a growth mindset for the most important leader in the world: you.
